When creating a passkey, several storage options are available. Choose the one that best suits your device and preferences. Note: If you are using a company-managed device, certain options may be restricted by your IT department. In this case, please contact your IT support.
- Password manager browser extension (e.g. Keeper Security)
- OS-native password manager (e.g. Windows Hello)
- External mobile device (e.g. Apple Passwords on iOS)
- Physical security key (e.g. YubiKey)
Option 1 – Password manager browser extension
If your password manager offers a browser extension and it is active, it will automatically be suggested when creating a passkey. The extension handles storing the passkey directly in your password manager, without any manual action required on your part.
Using Keeper Security as an example: when creating the passkey, a prompt will appear asking you to save it in your password manager. Follow the steps shown and use the extension to sign in going forward.
Note for corporate users: On company-managed devices, browser extensions may be centrally controlled by the IT department. If your password manager extension is unavailable or inactive, please contact your IT support.
If no extension is active, proceed to Option 2.
Option 2 – OS-native password manager
Most current operating systems include a built-in password manager capable of storing passkeys. Using Windows Hello as an example: in the system prompt that appears, select This Windows device and confirm the creation using your Windows Hello PIN or biometric data.
If you would like to use the OS-native password manager but have an active browser extension installed, you can dismiss the extension prompt. The operating system prompt will then appear automatically.
Note for corporate users: On company-managed devices, features such as Windows Hello are often configured centrally by the IT department. It is possible that setting up a passkey via this method is not permitted or is technically restricted. In this case, please contact your IT support or choose one of the other options.
Option 3 – External mobile device
If you would like to store your passkey in the native password manager on your mobile device, select iPhone, iPad, or Android device in the system prompt. A QR code will appear, which you simply scan with your mobile device's camera. Then follow the instructions on your device.
Please note: Passkey support on mobile devices was only introduced a few years ago. If you are running an older operating system version, this may cause issues. We recommend keeping your operating system up to date. If an update is not possible, please choose one of the other options.
Option 4 – Physical security key
Using the Security key option, you can store your passkey on a physical device, provided it supports the FIDO2 protocol. Suitable devices include a YubiKey or any other FIDO2-certified security key. Before getting started, make sure your device supports passkeys.
Insert the security key into your computer and follow the instructions in the system prompt to complete the setup.
